Sports News S14 Week 7
Please read this slowly whilst hitting yourself in the head with a frying pan. It’ll give you an idea of how I’m feeling at the moment.
It’s fair to say my enthusiasm for the Super 14 has waned somewhat this year. Regular readers may recall my week one comments that it wasn’t yet rugby season and here we are in week seven – nearly half way through the season and the Mighty Mighty Blackcaps still have three days of a test against the Dirty Filthy Cheating ‘Straaalyns to complete. Combine the early start with the offseason purchase of Stephen Bloody Brett by my Mighty Mighty Blues and I’m not afraid to admit that things are a little tough in my household at the moment. The very basis of my beliefs in under constant scrutiny every day as I wrestle with the remote. My brain tells me that Rugby Union is the better sport but the index finger suggests the N.R.L. is more entertaining.
Fortunately, dear readers, the brain won the battle again this week in a tiebreaker and I can bring you details – grim though they may be – of the weekend’s rugby action.
Friday night football didn’t get the juices flowing as the hapless Lions took on the High Landers at Carisbrook. A match summary of this game need not be too detailed. Suffice it to say that only the High Landers could allow the Lions 3 tries in the first 20 minutes and only the Lions are capable of losing after such a good start. If these two teams aren’t giving the Western Force a run for their money for the wooden spoon by round 14, I’ll be very surprised.
Friday night’s second game threatened to be a boomer as the Chiefs travelled away to a hyped up Brumbies outfit who were celebrating the return to the field of Julian Huxley after a life threatening illness. The match ebbed and flowed as Chiefs games tend to do this season but a Stephen Donald error late in the game in which he found touch on the full left the Brumbies at the right end of the field and the Canberran’s capitalised. Stephen Donald said little in the post match interview and despite the loss many Chiefs fans were pleased with his performance as he hasn’t been able to find touch all season so finding it on the full seems to be a step in the right direction.
I have no idea what happened when the Reds travelled to the Cheetahs as it has to be one of the most boring potential matchups in the competition. What I do know however is that the Hurri-canes (doof, doof, doof) Hurri-canes managed to continue their awful start to the season , losing to the Shooorks who slotted a last second penalty to see them home. I was really hoping to bring you some insider information on the feeling in the camp but my top secret source Nemia Tialata (@Neyza3) hardy ever tweets after a loss so the only thing I can offer via Twitter is that Cory Jane watched The Bounty Hunter at the movies on Sunday night.
The real hard thing to swallow on Saturday was my Mighty Mighty Blues losing to the Dirty Filthy Cheating ‘Tahs on Saturday night. We scored more than enough points as per usual but once again gave away slightly more than we scored. One highlight was the introduction of Taniela Moa to the field – remember that name folks – he’ll be the M.M.A.B’s number 9 within a few years. The truth is I was not really in the right frame of mind to watch this game as our cricket team – The Mighty Mighty A.U.C.C. Iron Maiden 1 day 4c – won the championship on Saturday and a dangerous cocktail of Speights, Laphroaig and adrenaline had taken its toll on my judgement well prior to kickoff. All I really remember is that the Blues lost and that I did a stirring rendition of Queen’s “We Are The Champions” that rivalled that of any other version I have heard over the years.
I greeted Sunday with a mighty headache and proceeded to spend the day on the couch flicking between Ross Taylor going crazy against a poor Australian bowling attack and the Warriors going even crazier over a non-existent Brisbane Broncos defensive line. The Phoenix bandwagon is almost back from the panel shop in its new Warriors livery and I think I may be buying a ticket if the lads can get a win under their belts next week.
As I write, I’m pretty sure I just saw an overtaking move in the Formula One... and now I think about it, this weekend the Mighty Mighty Blues lost, Stephen B Brett kicked a penalty, the Warriors won, the Mighty Mighty Black Caps took a first innings lead into a test match against our Trans Tasman two headed cousins and the Mighty Iron Maiden 1 day 4c won the final.
If this whole weekend has been a dream I’m gonna be pretty upset if it ends with me in front of a laptop writing an article.
Still – might be a good way of getting rid of this headache.
